  1. Disappointing to find that a book about a world-riveting drama could drag in parts. I was surprised that it felt so "flat," with emotions only described rather than evoked, and I found the tone very uneven -- sometimes unnecessarily epic in scale (the ancient geological and mythological origins of mining), sometimes colloquial and full of pop-culture references (NFL draft selection). Kids are able to understand, and are drawn in by, more nuanced stories than this presentation, and they deserve more drama and more clarity than this story gives.
