A blog for kids and adults in the St. Joseph County/Michiana area who are interested in understanding how books are eligible for the Newbery, and discussing which ones are truly distinguished.
Circle of Secrets by Kimberley Griffiths Litlle
Scholastic Press
2011
336p.
A year after her mother has deserted the family, eleven-year-old
Shelby goes to stay with her, deep in the Louisiana bayou, where they
both confront old hurts and regrets.
Suspenseful story with strong characters and a vivid setting in Louisiana bayou country. Shelby is a strong character as is her mysterious and fascinating mother Mirage, and there was some strong and beautiful imagery. But the plot played out somewhat predictably. I don't see it winning the Newbery, but I would definitely recommend it to kids looking for a tale of suspense. I think readers who enjoy Mary Downing Hahn would enjoy Circle of Secrets.
