  1. Both of my kids (whose preferred genre is fantasy) LOVED this book and think it's a strong Newbery contender. I found it a suspenseful story with engaging characters, but the ending seemed rushed and not as believable as the rest of the story. Reminiscent of The Incredible Journey and Lassie Come Home - which may count against it if Newbery considers plot originality.

  2. The thing that makes me think that this book is Newbery-worthy is how it lets you feel for the characters and understand their feelings. The author managed to convey very powerful emotions into words, and that takes very talented writing.
