This is a most beautiful and important book. It is deeply moving on so many levels. Surely, it is worthy of Newbery consideration. And the Caldecott committee should look at it, too!
I started this book expecting a straight forward prosaic history of the blues ... but realized quickly it is actually poetry clustered around African American experience, beginning with the despair of slavery and culminating in the triumph of music.
