A blog for kids and adults in the St. Joseph County/Michiana area who are interested in understanding how books are eligible for the Newbery, and discussing which ones are truly distinguished.
In 1935, when her mother gets a job housekeeping for a woman who does not like children, eleven-year-old Turtle is sent to stay with relatives she has never met in far away Key West, Florida.
Reading this one (well, listening to it) now--this is one I'd recommend to readers, because it's funny and the heroine is likeable--also a bit of history there w/ the Depression. Not sure it's Newbery worthy though--plot's a bit predictable, and I'm not knocked out by this one the way I have been by The Dreamer, Keeper, and One Crazy Summer.
Am now finished--enjoyed the story and will recommend it. 2 strongest elements were the protagonist & the historical setting. Made me more interested in Key West.
