Summary
In the summer of 1968, after travelling from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to spend a month with the mother they barely know, eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters arrive to a cold welcome as they discover that their mother, a dedicated poet and printer, is resentful of the intrusion of their visit and wants them to attend a nearby Black Panther summer camp.

  1. This was a differnt type of "missing mother" book in that the mother chose to leave. It also showed how much the mother means even if absent. The voice was a little uneven but could be attributed to fending for a little sister.

  2. Started reading this, then listened to it, and the audio book was delightful – the characters became more vivid and I felt like I was had gone back to a different time and culture. It provided a believable child’s-eye view of a world not often described, where Black Panthers ran local community services as well as protests. Memorable.
