I actually found the few chapters before the magical world was introduced to be more charming and enjoyable than the ones that followed. If as I reader I would prefer to go back to the "real" world, I think that's a sign that something about the fantasy world isn't working.<br />Perhaps a notch about run-of-the-mill contemporary fantasy, but not Newbery worthy from what I can tell so far. Thought it was well-done but mostly just a page-turner.
